Well we have a lot of people here who write poetry, which is awesome. ^^

But i'm just wondering if we had any people here who actually Slammed?

For those of you who have no idea what i'm talking about, Slam Poetry is part of Spoken Word, and it's basically poetry that you say out loud. This is called "spitting". And this is usually what happens at an Open Mic Night (a venue at a cafe or something where people can stand up to the mic and perform anything they want, like a guitar piece they wrote, or a poetry piece).

Poetry Slams are different in that they are actual poetry competitions. Here is how it works: You (or a group of people, but usually it's just you) spit your piece, and once you are done you are judged by 5 people (or 3 if it's not enough). Each of those 5 people give you scores from 1-10, with 10 being the best thing you've ever heard, and one decimal place to help prevent ties. The highest and lowest score are then dropped, and the other 3 scores are added up. The next person goes, and they spit their piece and the judges score. And it goes on and on like this until the end of the round. Then the next round starts in a whole new order (i'll talk about order in a sec.)

Just a few things you should know, though:

Your pieces can be no longer than 3 minutes. They can be as short as you want, but they can not exceed 3 minutes time. You are given a 10 second grace period, meaning that you are allowed to go up to 3:10 with out a point deduction. But as soon as you hit 3:11 you are deducted a half of a point. And for every ten seconds after that another half a point is taken away.

Judges are randomly picked out from the guests that arrive before the Slam starts, and are briefed as to what they need to do before hand.

Also, before the Slam actually starts the Slammers pick numbers out of a hat (or whatever random thing) to decide the order. Then for the next round the order is changed up. This can be done either by reversing the order, or whatever.

A poet, called the Goat Poet, does the first piece to start out with. The Goat Poet is not in the actual competition and is only there so no one has to go first. It also warms up the judges for their job, and it allows for the Slammers to see how the judges react to certain pieces so they can prepare.

Pieces can either be memorized or read off of paper. Both of these are judged no different from each other. Though it is recommended to be memorized to help performance and delivery.

I think it would be really cool to have some Slammers here. :) It's really fun to be a part of and you get a new take on poetry. Even if you guys don't want to do it i'm still going to be posting videos when i can. XD

Also, if this has captured your interest then look up Def Poetry Jam on youtube and see some Slamming in action. My favorites are Beau Sia, Saul Williams, and Buddy Wakefield.

I've been to a few. Never been up in one because I'm no poet.

Though I will be posting a piece tonight, just to be asinine.

I've never been to one before, but I'd like to go, it seems like it would be fun to see such things

Look up to see if there are any in your area. Or look up Def Poetry Jam on youtube. Also i think Brave New Voices (Slam Nationals) is going to be happening sometime soon if it hasn't happened already to try looking that up on Google or youtube too.
