Everyone comes from somewhere, so where did your character and their family come from?

Does your character come from a notorious linage?

Does your character come from a long line of people who are good at or employed at a specific thing?

Does your characters bloodline have anything defining or interesting about it?

In my world the inborn (rather than learned) ability to use magic is a genetic mutation passed down unreliably through families. So my character, who is a Mage, comes from a family with a few Mages down through the generations, though only one close enough to be a factor to her (a great-great aunt, who visits her as a spirit).  Her mother is Mexican and her father is Texan of German descent--a fairly common combo in this area.  She self-identifies as Mexican, which again is the typical thing for this area. As the bad guys in my world are based off local folklore, the ties to this state are very important.

One of my characters came from Egypt.  His lineage goes back to the Pharoahs.  Both his parents are Egyptian and extremely poor.  They live in an area called bab-el-Sharia which houses the bulk of the extremist Muslims in the country.

One of my characters descends from an ancient heroine of her culture. When they meet, the heroine is a spirit that helps the protagonist fight evil spirits. Kind of reminds me of Yu-Gi-Oh actually

I like retelling fairy tales, so my main character is...a princess.

And I thought, oh, I don't need to go all Song of Ice and Fire about this. She can just be a princess. Ruling and reigning over a principality, and everything.

And then I started to think up of greater and lesser noble houses, and the social/political climate of her parents and grandparents' times...essentially going all Song of Ice and Fire about it, or at least shuffling a few steps in that direction.

Which, um, isn't fair because none of those details are really going to make it into the story...they just help a bit with character development, so her lines of dialogue come out slightly easier... :P
