We all have comfort foods...so what's yours?  In the wintertime I tend to go for potato soup or mac and cheese. In the summertime I tend to go for tomato sandwiches and raw veggies. 

Don't know about y'all, but when it gets cold I want all the comforting I can get and will practically live on potato soup and mac and cheese.  In the summertime, on those rainy, stormy days or nights...I love me a couple of tomato sandwiches with mayo and all the raw veggies I can eat.  =P

Anything sweet, of any consistency between gummy and custard (or porridge, at a stretch).

Sticky sweet rice flour cakes are my favorite. They're called all sorts of different things all over Asia, of course, and they come in various different forms (whether they use whole grains of sticky rice or ground it down to a flour), but as long as it has sugar and rice and I'm unhappy then I guarantee it will disappear into my belly.

Mexican caramel flan is a weakness of mine, as well.

Whether or not I need comfort, some sort of gummy candy is always welcome.

What is carbonara? Can't say I've ever heard of it. Is it sweet? Salty? Both?  =P

When I developed gluten intolerance, I thought my pizza and mac and cheese days were over. Fortunately, there are a fair few gluten free options now. I still have my mac and cheese, (along with lactaid tablets), or pizza when I want it.  ;P

I don't see why not. I cook with wine so I guess it technically makes it a food.  XD

What's your booze of choice, Runic? I do gluten free beer or wine from time to time...not often though.  :)

I actually tend to prefer other, more herbal means of chillin' that can very well be made into tasty munchies.  ;)

Italian food is my favorite, too. I don't count it as comfort food because I consider it suitable for any and all occasions!

As for alcohol, I don't consider alcohol a comfort food for its own effect, like getting drunk is no escape or comfort that's worth the hangover...but on a cold day, anything to give a warmer flavor to chocolate is definitely a comfort for me! Vodka mudslides, Bailey's... While not chocolate, I'm also curious about pears poached in red wine (with sugar and spices to turn the reduced wine into syrup.) They're usually served with a spoonful of fresh cream.

And while we're going all gourmet about it, I present: Macaroni and Fondue Cheese

(Fondue is a cheese sauce with white wine. I didn't know that until recently, I thought it was just melted cheese. I also once thought that carbonara was a cream sauce, but it originally isn't, it's just eggs and cheese cooked/melted by the heat of the freshly cooked pasta, but no cream originally.)

Hi, Elly! No, I don't mind. Been swamped with everything since school had started, and I'm still trying to adjust to my new schedule, so I wasn't able to reply to this, even though I read the reply. Thanks! :)


I agree with you that Italian food just suits all occasions. I love all pasta recipes, but lately I've developed a bias towards carbonara.

On alcohol, I'm not much of an alcohol drinker, mainly because I mostly have male cousins (15 of them), who are stricter than my parents, and who are watching my every move, especially when I'm out (sorta like my bodyguards). And it's kinda hard to get out of their sight. But I had sneaked a drink or two, and found the occasional buzz comforting, but not for me.

Oh yeah, just to add, I really like mozarella cheese sticks, too. :)

Ah...the carbonara actually sounds kind of tasty.  Italian food is pretty much in the Land of No-No for me. Imagine not being able to go out to eat...like, EVER.  I think I have been out to eat twice since I was diagnosed with Celiac disease....both times was this wonderful little pizzeria called Your Pie and they served gluten free pizzas!

Alas, the area and state I live in now have no Your Pie places. They haven't made it up to Kentucky yet. The franchise originated in Georgia....Athens, GA I believe.

Damn good thing I am a good cook or else I'd starve!  ;P

Fig bar cookies used to be my favorite comfort food. LOVED those things. With the onset of that damned celiac disease/gluten intolerance they are no longer an option. I miss fig bars. They went so well with a cup of Lady Grey or Earl Grey tea.

I would fix me up some tea grab my package of fig bars and head to the living room on a nice rainy and stormy night to watch spooky movies. Loved doing that.  :)

There was a time when I love chocolate chip cookies. I still love them, but not as much as I do then.

And still on cookies, when I was a kid, I really like "dunking" my Oreo cookies in a glass of milk. That was the best food ever, then.

I have a ton of comfort foods. My go-to is usually pizza because it is easy and convenient to pick up. There are tons of pizza shops near where I live and it always hits the spot. I don't think I could ever get tired of it! If the weather is particularly gnarly or it's late at night, I can also pop a frozen pizza into the oven. It's not as tasty as fresh pizza, but in the pinch, it will do!

My favourite type of restaurant food is Thai, so whenever I've had a bad week and need to de-stress I will head out to treat myself to a nice dinner at a Thai restaurant. I love curries and pad thai.

Oh wow...you must have REALLY needed some comforting! XD

You're probably one of them skinny little people who eat like a horse and never gain an ounce either. As I recall, toaster strudels are NOT low in calories...and full of junk food badness that just tastes SO good. I used to eat the hell out of those things when I was in my 20s...not anymore.

Alas, another of those Celiac Land of No-No foods for me.

Whenever I'm depressed I crave chocolate like hell and I know this isnt a good thing but as long as it comforts me, I'm happy :P

 

I absolutely adore carbs, pasta, mashed potatoes and bagels are my favorite. The weather, season, month, nothing impacts my love of carbs. I have been known to make a huge pot of mashed potatoes in the middle of July and polish them off.

My go-to comfort foods are Fried Chicken and my Mom's super-creamy Mac and Cheese.  Normally, when I'm stressed out, I'll eat fried chicken and mac-and-cheese at least once during that week, but I have to be very careful.  The meal itself is at least 1000 calories, and with me trying to watch my weight, this is almost a full day's allowance. I also really love a Grilled Cheese sandwich and creamy Tomato soup when the weather is chilly.  It reminds me of my childhood and always puts me in a very good mood.

It's got to be fish and chips for me.  I don't have them very often, but when I really want some comfort food, nothing else will do.  They have to be smothered in salt and vinegar, and I have to have a cup of strong tea with it.  Everything is right in the world when I've just had some fish and chips.   :) :)

My chosen comfort food is ice cream. I love that stuff !  Chocolate, strawberry, and all of the fancy little flavors like "Moose Tracks" and Banana Split.
Right now, I am only eating foods that are anti-inflammatory, to help my heart to heal properly; so ice cream is definitely NOT on the list, along with any other sugar or floury foods, or even starchy veggie, like potatoes.
The menu is mostly veggies, with a little meat and fruit.
Now and then, I allow myself a tiny bit of ice cream (just so I don't forget what it tastes like, you understand); and some cream in my morning cup of coffee (no dairy, either).

So far, I am doing ok, and the little tidbits of ice cream keep me from feeling like I have given up all the good food in life.

I really really love salty things, so once in a while I'll treat myself to cup noodles, which I normally try to avoid. Or maybe a bag of chips... I'll be dropping those, though, so I need to start learning how to make my own chips!! It doesn't look terribly hard...

It sounds like you're handling it better than I could, HFL!  But you are right to allow yourself just small amounts of things - a little of what you fancy can do you the world of good. 

I try to give ice cream a swerve at times too.  Like you, I love it, and I make my own and come up with all sorts of fab flavours.  But it's not good for the waistline, or anything else for that matter.  Lately I've been substituting the milk and cream for coconut milk, and omitting the eggs.  A few days ago I made coconut mango ice cream that contained just those two ingredients - no sugar added either.  It churned up and froze very well, and it was delicious! Look out for some of those non-dairy ice creams in store, but obviously watch the sugar.

I remember reading that you could take bananas , freeze them, and then put them in the food processor and it would come out with an ice cream-like texture, but I have never tried that either. I am pretty sure that it said you could also add berries or peaches to have different  flavors. Since I am able to eat fruit, maybe I will try making something like that !

I have started following the Paleo eating plan, and I am getting along with it really well. It is basically all anti-inflammatory veggies and fruit, and a small amount of meat, (not processed, like lunch meat or spam), and no dairy.
So far, I am feeling good, healing up well, and have even lost about 10 lbs, which is an awesome thing ! !

That's great news, HappyFlowerLady!  10lbs is a significant amount to lose.  I follow some of the Paleo principles because I think it makes absolute sense, and it helped me with chronic pain I was suffering a few years ago.  I find it difficult to cut out dairy because I love raw milk, yogurt, and cheese, so I keep them to a minimum.   8-)  I try to watch the grains as much as I can, but I am partial to some of those too.  But the rest of the principles I follow meticulously. 

My version of the coconut ice cream was just coconut milk, mango (I used frozen chunks) and a tablespoon of lemon juice.  If you prefer it a bit sweeter, you could add 2 tablespoons of raw honey.  I've tried it this way too, but because I don't have too much of a sweet tooth I preferred it without the honey.  You could even add some grated fresh ginger, which I have yet to try, but I hear it's very good.  I did mine in an ice cream maker, so I don't know how it would turn out without one.  I blended some of the mango chunks with the milk, and chopped up the rest so I had some little chunks dotted about in it. 

The banana blending and freezing will work - I've made ice lollies doing this before - but it's even better if you blend the bananas with some apple juice.  If you have some ice lolly moulds and sticks, you could whip up these treats very easily and have them on hand when you feel like it.  You could do this with just about any fruit really, and you don't need any sweetener of any kind. 

If you are missing sweet things, raw honey is a fantastic substitute.  I'm experimenting with baking with raw honey, and so far it's going well.  I use it in my ice creams a lot too.

Potato Chips! Well, I love eating as much as I love writing, so I love different kinds of comfort food. Those on the top of my list are potato chips, marshmallows, pizza, and instant noodles. Yes, none of them are really healthy, but I don't want to eat apples or other kinds of fruits and vegetables when I feel down.

I think that there is a difference between a comfort food, and just eating. I can see what you are saying Umbrellaausten, and when I am feeling miserable about something, then an apple just doesn't get it for a comfort food !
My plan is to eat the healthy foods as much as possible, and then when I do have something to eat just because it makes me feel better, it is just one little part of my diet, and not an every day occurrence.
Today, I had to go to the heart doctor for the one-month checkup (he says I am doing great, and the heart is staying in rhythm)  ,and it was almost 4 hours later when we were finally done with all of the tests. It had been a long time since breakfast; so my husband and I went to Taco Bell, and I had a soft taco. Lots of the "fire" sauce, and it was delicious !
But that was a special time meal for me, and the tortillas were not very large, so it is not like a had a lot of grain.  And I didn't order too much and overeat because I was hungry; so all in all, I feel good about the day.

When I want to eat something that I am not supposed to have; I remind myself that I am doing this to help my heart heal, and that often helps me to make the right decision.

Chocolate is my all time comfort candy as it can make you feel better even on the worst day!  As far as comfort food goes, it has to be a hash brown hot dish that I learned to make a few years ago.  You mix hasbrowns, LOTS of cheddar, sour cream, shredded onions, sour cream, cream of chicken soup, and picked peppers in a big bowl and spread it evenly into a baking dish.  The sprinkle cornflakes all over the top of this dish and top it off with a half cup of melted butter...oh yes, I just went there!  Bake it in the oven for an hour and you have pure heaven on a plate.  I usually make a large dish of this and eat if for breakfast and dinner for a couple of days...so completely yummy!

Chocolate is a daily essential for me, a bit like water. It keeps me going, calms me down and keeps me sane. I remember at work, i heard someone tell a new member of staff, if they ever needed me to a favor, chocolate was the currency.

Anyhow, a real comfort meal would be a bowl of pasta with some pesto, peas and corn with some chilli flakes. If I'm really impatient, then I will substitute the pasta for ramen noodles and it's done within  few minutes.

I have to really be in the mood for pasta and so it is not really a comfort food for me.  Perhaps it is because I live in the Pacific Northwest and potatos are so abundant here, but anything with potatos in it is sure to warm my soul.  That and fish, because there is a lot of that here too and I am the only one in my family that eats it. My husband will only eat light fish and those days are far and few. It is very strange to me that some people who live near the water do not like seafood...

Rosyrain, I understand you completely about the seafood thing. It seems strange for people to live so close to the ocean, where there is actual fresh seafood and fish, and then they don't eat it. I remember getting the fresh salmon when I lived on the Washington coast, and also the fresh crabs. Once upon a time, they were like 29 cents a lb, and we would buy several and just feast on the fresh crabs. My daughter still talks about how much she enjoyed having fresh crabs and cracking open the claws and shell parts to eat.
I have not had any fresh crab in a long time; it is just too expensive, and probably not fresh at all by the time it gets to Alabama.
We do have oysters here when they are in season, and  watch for them to go on sale, and then make pan-fried oysters served on a bed of shredded lettuce, with fresh home-made tarter sauce-----Heaven ! !

I can't eat oysters.  When I was young I had a friend whose parents were those types that you sit at the table until you eat all of your food.  I guess this is fine, but you can't expect young kids to sit down to a plate of boiled oysters and expect that our plates would be clean in a short time at all.  I still remember how grossed out I was and to this day I can't even think about trying an oyster again.  I am not sure exactly how they cooked them, but I know they were not pan fried, which would have probably not traumatized me. 

I love fresh crab and eat it every chance I get.  It is a fun food because you have to crack the shell and work for your little morsel of meat...so yummy!

My comfort food would always be ice cream, pizza, spaghetti and fries. Starchy foods, though they're bad, make me happy.

When stressed, I also look for chocolates and sweets then I'd finish off with a little salty snack. Weird combinations but they work for me.

Oh that just sounds incredibly yummy. I love fish with that malt vinegar! OH! I have GREAT news everyone! I am NOT gluten intolerant, nor do I have Celiac disease! All this time, (and boy was I pissed!), it's was a dairy allergy and severe lactose intolerance! It often gets mistaken for Celiac disease because the symptoms are similar except for the dairy issue doesn't make you lose weight. It just hurts like a bitch and makes you never wanna see food again. Not even those lactaid pills work.  I'm just THRILLED though! Going dairy free is a hell of a lot cheaper and easier than going gluten-free!

This is totally me! I always have a bag of Lay's Original Chips around. The main reason I started munching on it so often is because it's actually soothing when I have a sore throat. When I was a child with a cold, my mom always handed me a small bag of chips and a cough drop. Since then, it's become my go-to comfort snack.

And speaking of making your own chips, it's definitely easy! Pretty time consuming and uses a lot of potatoes for a decent amount of chips, but at least it's healthier indeed. (Short form recipe: Use a mandolin to slice potatoes. Soak in water for about an hour (to remove the starch). Toss in a bowl with oil (any of your choice) and add your choice of spices. Lay potatoes on baking pan, without overlapping. Bake at 375 F until you see it's crispy enough to your standards!)

Anyways, my real comfort food (meal) is definitely my dad's chicken soup. This soup always brightened the darkest of my days! The smell alone just changed my attitude. Man, if I could have an unlimited supply, or if I could buy his soup in stores... well... that would just be awesome. Y'know what, I also have a thing for chicken fingers and hot sauce. It's another childhood meal I still go to when I can't decide what I'm really in a mood for. I can go on and on, I just love food :D

May I suggest Argentinian food? In winter I like to make puchero (pot, basically). In summer, I improvise salads. My method is the same for both: just throw anything I think would go well in there, and mix; i.e, the "stone soup" method. ;)

Anything that is full of carbs and bound to be bad for me, haha. Pasta is what I usually go for right away when I want some "comfort food". Good thing about it is that there are plenty of ways to serve pasta, and you can add other things to it to make it more than just a carb. My favorite is penne pasta with alfredo sauce and grilled chicken breast; the most delicious combo ever!

But, because I generally want to have something right away when I'm in need of comfort food, I often just grab whatever there is available at the time. It is pretty bad, I know, but I always want to go for the most unhealthy thing available. Chips, chocolate, ice cream... If I know it is bad for me, I know it'll taste good and cheer me up. :P

The only healthy food that I go for when it is available easily for me is ceasar salad with chicken breast. Actually, come to think of it, just about anything with chicken breast added onto it is good. I love chicken; it is definitely my favorite source of protein, and a very versatile meat as well.

My go to would be baked mac and cheese. But, if I'm really needing something that will ease my nerves I would say fried snapper and plantains. I'm an island girl by association of my parents. This with some pineapple soda just does for me.😊

Comfort food. Hmm. When I don't have to cook, that is comfort food! Bahahahahahaaa! Anyway. When I cook, which is always, because I love to cook, my favourite comfort food has to be my fried chicken or my lasanga, or even for breakfast my homemade saisage gravy and homemade biscuits. My son tears that up, I have to make A LOT. Haha. Gosh, now I'm hungry. Haha.
When I make fried chicken I marinate it first, and not in what you'd expect. I'll give my secret: 2 eggs cracked into a bowl, 4 tbs garlic powder, 4 tbs onion powder, 7 tbs seasoned salt, 1 tbs regular salt, 3 tbs black pepper, 3 tbs paprika, and 5 tbs minced garlic. Let chicken marinate at least 30 minutes to overnight. Then season 6 cups flour with 4 tbs paprika, 4 tbs salt, and 3 tbs black pepper. Dredge chicken in flour and gently place in hot oil, and fry until chicken is done, usually 10 to 15 minutes, or until juices run clear. And they are just the juiciest chicken ever. You have to have a lot of salt to the marinade,  makes it juicier, not sure why.
My homemade sausage gravy biscuits is as follows: brown one pound of sausage, then add 4 tbs butter, melt, then add 1/cup flour, add let it cook down 2-3 minutes, then add 2 cups milk, and then my secret ingredients-grate 2 tsp nutmeg, and add 2 tbs Whorechestershire Sauce and let it thicken on low. For the biscuits, I use a Bisquick box and follow the directions on the back. After mixing, I roll it out and cut circles of biscuits out of it, and place in greased baking dishes and continue to roll and cut circles out. And when all are placed on the baking dishes, I brush melted butter on the biscuits, and then grind fresh cracked pepper on top, and bake about 13 to 15 minutes. When they are done, I cut those bad boys up and poor sausage gravy over them, and my son just destroys them.
Gosh, I'm making myself even hungrier. Haha. And I told ya'll my secret ingredients or secret way of marinating and they are so juicy. But I don't mind sharing

Right now I am into fruits and veg...

I'm loving cellery with almond butter. So freaking good.

And ritz with salami, cheese, mayo, and pickles ha ha.
