I know people who do this offline, too, but I'm mostly referring to online.

Are you one of those people who correct other people's grammar/spelling? I'm always seeing Facebook screenshots, for example, where people are correcting "you're*" and "they're.*"

Sure, it annoys me to see mistakes, too, but if I'm friends with someone, I would never correct them so publicly and in mean ways like that. Why are people even friends with others who are rude like that?

Interesting post. Actually I think the purpose of the not so helpful correction is often to demean
the person who posted and establish superiority.
And yes I agree, it is well pretty arrogant and rude IMHO.
Yes we do see it all the time. I have to say whenever I post something I often edit it once
more after it is up. Thanks to those edit post options.
I really don't want to be the recipient of one of those nasty little put down posts.

I do it but not like that, just to let them know. I've never seen it as mean when I do it or when others do it.

Now in the real world my adopted sister says he's and his backwards. It drives me INSANE. She also says it backwards online lol.

I certainly wouldn't do it publicly on Facebook. After all, it's just a chat site - it's not like reading an article that's peppered with grammar mistakes. I do tend to suggest to people, in PMs which I preface with, 'I loved reading this, but I wonder if you realise ...' that they may want to review their article and correct the grammar. However, I only tend to do this if the article is basically good to start with. I wouldn't bother if there was no value for the reader in there.

The only time I publicly berated someone about their grammar was on another discussion site, when they wrote a barely understandable post complaining that Helium was a scam site because it deleted his articles. He then insisted. 'I very good writer, write lots good articles,' and that brought down the red mist for me.

Yes I think that would be justified. 'The Red Mist' nice turn of phrase.
Oh yeah Sandra, I did put one article up on Helium but have not done so recently. It was quite a bit of time since I posted there. I might think of a revisit.

It's a good time to go back there. They're clearing a lot of dross from the site, ready for the launch of the new, improved Helium, which is scheduled for the summer. Since the clean up started, I've seen my revenue share on page views income increase by around 20%.

The site is making an effort to be taken more seriously, so it's worth going back. If I can help with anything, message me over there.

Oh really now? Are they just cleaning out a bunch of the crap and your articles are ranking higher within the site? Or is something else going on that's increased your revenue?

Hi Sandra. Thank you. Yes I will visit again. My story is still up there and at one point I got a good rating, but as I said it was a while ago that I posted there. Story on the top motorcycle movies, in case you were wondering. Anyway I will revisit.  I think I did earn a very small amount from the piece but the total was so small I think it did not qualify for cash out.

Yes, Jessi - that's basically it, but there's more to it. Because Helium is clearing out such a lot of bad content, all our articles are figuring higher in Google searches, which of course drives new readers to the site. Also, the higher profile of Helium articles means that some of us are getting more enquiries for private work as well. It seems as if the push to clean up the site has resulted in everyone taking Helium more seriously.

Oh nice! That makes sense. I never thought that poorly of Helium, but in recent years, it definitely wasn't a site that I heard that much great about any more. People who had been there for many years still spoke highly of it, but only as residual income. It's good to see it's coming back around as a serious site again, though. Maybe I'll jump in on it this time around.

As well as being a regular writer on Helium I am Channel Manager for the William Shakespeare channel and a Helium Editor. Since the New Year, all the Editors have been tasked with getting rid of everything that is bad about Helium - very short articles that are little more than statements, poorly written stuff, and articles that are peppered with inappropriate capitals or exclamation points, personal rants that are written under knowledge-based artcle titles.  Writers who have just dropped a few indifferent articles before clearing off elsewhere are seeing their articles deleted and their accounts closed.

The good thing about this is that many of the writers - myself included - are checking through their own older articles and either editing them to bring them up to standard or requesting deletions when editing is out of the question. All writers improve over time, and if anyone goes back 5 years, they'll see room for improvement in their eariler stuff. I know I did.

I'm not a cheerleader for Helium, and there's nothing in this for me, but they are definitely aiming to be a serious player in online publishing. It's a good site to get in with if you're serious about your writing and are particular who you associate with in the online publishing world.

Amen to that. I would love to go back and re-write some of my old content, but I just never justify using the time on it....or I forget.

I think I have definitely improved over the years. I think I have also let my quality slide in more recent years at times, though, too. I find that people are often just as happy with mediocre content that doesn't take nearly as long to put together, so I find myself cheating or settling for that at times, too. :(

It depends on what situation I run into. I'm an editor, which I edit and proofread other people's works when they need to. Most of their works contain grammatical errors in which it's normal because good writers still make mistakes. However, I don't usually do that to people who just post their status or something like that because that would consider rude. I sometimes do let them know about the problem by messaging or e-mailing them, but I don't do that publicly unless their writings are difficult to understand (I would also say it in a nice way).

I don't think there is any point in correcting someone's grammar/spelling on their Facebook wall. All it does is make you look bad and alienate the person and others. There might be an occasion where you can do it jokingly, but even that has its limits.

I agree. I would think it is a good idea to correct someone's grammar or spelling, especially on social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and so on. I would consider it is kind of impolite to do so.

Impolite is an accurate way to describe it. I think though if someone took it upon themselves to correct the grammar of people on Facebook they would spend their entire day engaged in it from week to week. Facebook is glaring example of the literacy condition we currently face internationally.

Ill do it to certain friends, but only if we already have that type of relationship where we big the hell out of each other for fun.

Outside of that though, it bugs me when I see people doing it. As if they've never made a grammatical error.
