As an ideal reply to get the topic going, I want people to tell me one person, religion/party, company, etc. that is good and one that is evil and why.

Good - my brother - known online as Psycho. Why? Because he has the most compassionate heart I've ever seen in a fierce warrior.

Evil - That person that cut me off earlier...no explanation needed there :P

Psycho's a fierce warrior with a compassionate heart, I like how that sounds.

Thanks! I was thinking it was rather poetic myself when I wrote it :P It's very true though! You should see him when anyone around him is threatened or hurt in some way. He goes into kill mode! A little bit of overkill sometimes... But at the same time he's the type who would be there to hold a stranger while they cried.

Good - I'm not sure. Animals perhaps, because they just act on instinct.

Evil - Comcast (internet provider in the USA which never seems to stay up long, BigPond in Aus is 100 times better than Comcast lol). Because they cause grief and suffering.

You should probably have a look at what dolphins get up to these days, they can be real shitheads.

Babies! They can't be evil, they're all (usually) so cute!

Evil is such a strong word. I'm not sure I can pick someone out for that.

Good and evil are subjective. i don't think that they are any one who is purely good or evil.

If I had to pick someone as being good it would be my children. Mostly because I'm thier moma and I have to think they are good. Even when they throw the evil tantrum sometimes.

I don't know if I would label anyone as evil. I think even the most hated, dispicable man has at least a drop of good in him. It just takes the right circumstances or the right people to get the good to shine through.

Good and evil? Well, I can be good - very good. If I think someone needs help, it dosn't matter who it is, friend or stranger, if I can help them, I will. If I can't, I'll find someone who can, because if I can see that someone needs help, I won't rest until they get it.

Evil? That's me as well. I am a Gemini, which basically means I have a dual nature. Even if you discount the astrology crap, it's still me. Can I be good and evil? You'd better believe it! I'm a good friend to have, but a bad enemy. You mess with anyone I care about, and you neeed to watch your back.  There's nothing I won't do to defend my friends and family.

I'll agree with MelissaST (hey, that rhymes!) that there is no perfect good or evil - only varying ratios in everyone and everything.

... except for me, but then you're getting away from mere "good" and "evil" and into "Godlike" territory ...

I would say friends who teach you how to be honest and work hard, and those who teach you how to cut corners and get something while you don't deserve it (cheat). Does that count? I have a few of them in my friends circle. Sometimes it's tempting to pick the easy way, even if you know it's not right to do so.

Okay here's another thought, not someone I know and not even someone of this era but the Roman Catholic monk Torquemada was an officer and a high ranking and powerful individual in the Roman Catholic Church. He was considered a holy man. He also persecuted Jews and had infidels and heretics tortured and put to death and was one of the main forces behind the Inquisition.
The History Channel in a series entitled Most Evil listed him as one of the most evil individuals in history.
A figure of the church, and few would argue he is not evil.
In contrast the head of the Church of Satan Anton LaVey, who may have been a hustler and a bit of a spotlight seeker but he was never on the level of evil that this evil Church figure achieved.
I am not presenting LaVey as a figure of good either by the way.
A figure of good? One of my favorites is Martin Luther King, not faultless but a figure of good in my opinion.

All living things are always on the good side if they are properly structured to become friendly when treated properly at birth. A person only becomes bad if they are treated wrongly or have been raised up wrong.
Also, lots of internet providers are pretty bad as some of them rely on others for them to work. Sometimes the main internet providers are updating their service so some of the other service providers that rely on them go out of service.

Do only good or only evil people actually exist? I find it hard to believe. In my opinion any of us mortals could be definitely good or definitely evil as it's impossible to know the other one thoroughly. It's difficult to tell what's in depth of one's soul so categorizing people like that seems absurd to me.

Because as Mel Brooks said,

"Let's face it - you can't Torquemada anything!"  8-)

Schindler was a great man. He was a womaniser/swinger and did many "sinful" things but the fact that he tried to help the Jews was enough for me, and for them. I think sometimes being good is overcoming your own obstacles and sticking your neck out for others - and just in doing that you've nullified some evil.

All living things are always on the good side if they are properly structured to become friendly when treated properly at birth. A person only becomes bad if they are treated wrongly or have been raised up wrong.

Not true, I think your personality comes into affect here. When I was growing up with my little brother and sister they were both treated right and lovingly/nicely and I watched them grow and develop personalities - and no amount of teaching, discipline, or anything could change them.

For example Lauren is like me. She's pretty aggressive without meaning to be and she's boisterous and strong just like I was as a child. She orders and bosses people around, probably without realising. No amount of "hey darls you're being bossy, do you want to re-word that" or "sweety you're not the mummy, don't tell him what to do" or "use your nice voice" comments ever made it lessen or stop, and neither did time outs, groundings, or spankings. I am in NO way saying that is evil just saying that it's something that's a part of her.

I was like that growing up too, and I didn't learn to be nice until I was much older (she's reaching that time now). When I was a teenager I was heavily mistreated by all around me but I did not turn evil, in fact it made me want to be good more than ever.

I think it depends on the person because some people might go hell bent on revenge and others will go hell bent on forgiveness. It depends on your personality/temperament I think.

Sorry Bunny to hear that you were mistreated. Mistreating others can be done deliberately or even because the mistreater just does not care. I suppose sometimes by ignorance rather than malice.
Or sometimes to increase the mistreater's feeling of worth and value by lessening the worth or value of the subject of the abuse.
I guess that is main definition of a psychopath, a person who sees others as being there for his or her amusement and use.

Thanks Ryder! There are people out there who had it far worse than me but I accept that all of my trials have made me better able to understand others and help them. Without my trials I would probably still be a bitch ha ha.

Hi Bunny I know there are people who have gone through stuff I don't even want to think about.
There was a Dickens quote, something about the best steel must go through the fire. (approximate quote, not exact). Anyway I as an unwashed heathen and almost practicing Odinist (lol) do not like to see good people go through bad  'stuff.' I  was going to use another word  but regardless, I guess life has bad moments for almost all of us.
cheers Bunny
