[Discussion] Does Democracy work in the Middle East?

I used to be really on board with having the Middle Eastern nations become more democratic in their selection of leader but having witnessed the trouble that Egypt is having I wonder how good of an idea it is now.  A lot of countries in that area have monarchies and while it isn't the ideal situation, you don't see the daily killings that you see on the news lately.  I think something in between monarchy and democracy would be good for Egypt but not sure about the other countries.  My ex husband came from Egypt and I have been there several times.  The majority of the population is uneducated (directly due to Mubarak's policies) and are easily swayed by the religious extremes in the country.

What do you think? Is democracy a solution for the Middle East?

I think the monarchy would only be worse for them, unless they got some really awesome, wise leader to be the king.
Some people say that America should make Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries its colonies, but it's so offensive and regressive that it's not worth commenting on. I'll just say that only USA would benefit from that and they would try to make it sound as if it's the best thing that could happen to Middle East.
I guess democracy is the only solution.

A few years ago, my Fibromyalgia progressed to the point where I was unable to do much walking.  I loved to walk the beach every night and I had to give it up.  After mourning the loss of my favorite past-time I decided to start writing.

I started out entering the Three Minute Fiction contests run by NPR.  Those contests got me excited to the point where I was ready to branch out and try writing a novel.  Well to date I have three unfinished novels and I would like to blow the dust off of them and try to give them the time they deserve.

I'm hoping this site inspires me to write more since when I am writing I am truly at my happiest.
