Debbie O’Conner directed me to this little gadget today—it’s called Write or Die, namely because if you don’t write, you suffer. . . . In other words, it’s writing for masochists.

Ok, so you don’t die, but if the Web application senses that you are not writing it will either write a pleasant warning to get going again, play an incredibly-annoying noise (one of which is called The Devil’s Interval), or start eating what you’ve already written. You can set it to whichever consequence you think you can handle. Yes, there is a pause button, but you can only use it once. The electric shock mode is a futuristic mode which the author hopes to enable soon.

Mode: Gentle, Normal, Kamikaze, Electric Shock
Grace Period: Forgiving, Strict, Evil
Time Goal: 10 min – 2 hours

You can watch Dr. Wicked’s YouTube video on how it works, too.

Write or Die Screencast - Dr Wicked's Writing Lab

Dr. Wicked’s mission is to “provide writers with consequences for not writing, thus instilling them with fear and productivity.” His next goal is to write code for an application that forces him to exercise or suffer the consequences. Apparently, the natural consequences just don’t happen fast enough for his liking.

May I suggest, Dr, Wicked, that the electric shock mode might be more feasible for the exercise app, especially if downloaded to the iPhone on one’s hip?

I liked the idea of this when it was first posted, but I didn't use it until stumbling back upon it recently. Dr. Wicked made a Desktop Edition now, that, for 10 bucks, has a few more features and s usable offline.

It's a great program. Over the past two days I've started up a habit where I  can pump out over 2000 words in an hour. Is nice.

I can't write using Write or Die. Mostly because the pressure doesn't release my anxiety and help me write more. Instead, it just makes me feel so bottled up that suddenly I'm losing the few words I choked out.

I'm happy to stick with the blank page. Somehow, it's more comforting and still I feel the pressure to write. Anyone else struggle with Write or Die?

I do because there's no real consequences and I'm in complete control...but it could be good for others. Now if I had statistics....there would be smoke behind me ha ha!

Oh, I have never heard about this idea before. I will give it a try because I don't want to die young. Thank you for sharing it! I'm starting to write NOW.

Yeah, it's not working for me at all. Maybe it's good when you have an entire thing in your head and just need some help/motivation writing it all down. But I think that it's not a perfect choice for a random creative writing afternoon or whatever. At least not for me.

The idea behind this is both sadistic and awesome.  Now if only there was an at-home option where someone threatens to wear your skin.

"It puts the words on the page or else its skin gets flayed"

About Sally Hanan
I’m originally from Wicklow, Ireland, but managed to permanently escape the cold, wet weather with my family in 1995. The true story about being allowed into the US is that my husband and I got lucky with the lottery visa, but I tell people that America just couldn’t bear to be without my wit and charm. I now live in TX, where I am known for chumming up to people who own boats and cook rib-eye steak on the bar-b-que.
I do housework when someone is coming over, and I am allergic to exercise. I love laughing with my husband, reading and writing in Starbucks, and eating lots and lots of Cadbury’s chocolate. I serve as a volunteer inner-healing counselor, and I just resigned my position of youth pastor.
