When I was a little girl, my dad had what I thought was the most amazing radio in the world. It had the regular AM stations, but it also had a shortwave band. Sometimes he would turn on the shortwave and we listened to what sounded like Chinese, and other strange and wonderful languages. Mostly, it wasn't anything that we could understand, but it was sure a lot of fun listening to it anyway.
The radio had a big bright green "eye" that would get wider and narrower as he tuned it in to the station. Sometimes, the radio made really weird sounds as he was finding the station and getting it tuned in.

My favorite singer was (of course) Roy Rogers, and I loved it when the announcer at KSPT, our local radio station would say that they were "calling Roy Rogers up to the mic".    As I listened to Daddy's radio, I envisioned the radio station with all the singers just sitting around there in chairs, waiting to be "called up to the mic".

One day, my dad had to go to the station, and asked if I wanted to go along. I was beside myself with joy ! Roy Rogers !
I was going to see Roy Rogers, and maybe even watch him sing.
I could hardly wait to get there ! !

When we arrived at the radio station, we walked inside, and I looked around, but there were NO singers, and NO Roy Rogers, anywhere.
Finally, I tugged on Daddy's sleeve, and whispered "Where is Roy Rogers at ?"
He gave me a blank look, so I had to explain that I wanted to meet Roy Rogers and watch him sing. How disappointed I was when the announcer gently explained to me that none of the singers were really there, and he was just playing records.

Radio was never the same for me again.....

It feels like more of a blog post or journal than a fictional story, was it something that really happened in real life?

I've worked at the 979fm radio station in the past and I thought it was really cool to read from a child's perspective of the radio.

*note I think your a really good writer and should keep it up :D :)

Thank you for the comment, Besnardm !  This is actually a true story from when I was a little girl, so you are right about that.
It is also my first time of posting any kind of writing, and I am not that familiar with blogs, and the other options as to where to put it, so I just put it in short stories.
Life was very different back in the early 1950's, and children now would probably not even imagine that the singers were all at their local radio station like I did at that age.

You're a wonderful writer! I didn't really think of it like that because it was explained to me early on. It's still a bit magical though, with all those waves and what not.

As a kid I was actually pretty involved with radio...my father used to be an announcer. I can remember when Diana died because he wrote and sung a song live on the air. He was incredibly torn up about it. It was a beautiful song.

Amazing work! Great job on this story, I really enjoyed it. It's great to grow up with an overactive imagination so when you get older it doesn't dull so much! ;D

What a beautifully related memory. Positively heartwarming. I wonder if your dad would have taken you to the station if he'd had any idea how disappointed you were going to be.

HR, one of my favorite things was to be able to go somewhere (anywhere) with my father. Since I was an only child, and my parents were into their 40's before they had me, they both enjoyed taking me places with them.
I am sure that it never occurred to my dad that I believed all the singers were there at the radio station, or he would have certainly explained to me how it really worked, and then taken me along to show me what a radio station was actually like.

Yeah. I bet he was a little saddened by it all. I was an only child as well. I was crazy about my dad. My mom, too; of course, but she was around all of the time where my dad was not. He stayed on the road a lot. We enjoyed each other's company immensely, though, when he was at home.

As far as just wanting to go someplace (anyplace at all) with someone, that would have to have been my grandfather. That man really hung the moon for me and I would say that he is the one who instilled in me my love of horses if it weren't for the fact that I think I was born loving them.

I miss all of them. My grandparents. My parents. I will see them again, though. This I know.
