For starters, do you even have a writer's bio written?

This might be what you include on your blog that you link back to when you write for someone else. It could be what you've written to go inside the cover flap of your upcoming book. Or it could be any other snippet that you have written about yourself to explain to people quickly who you are and what you do.

If you have one, what does yours say?

Quote
Jade Elizabeth is an eccentric young woman who enjoys writing stories and poems with hidden deeper meanings. She is quoted saying “Writing to me is not a hobby. It's a passion. It's something that lets my thoughts expose themselves, and my heart shine through where other art could not.

Commonly her poems are inspired by love or depression, and are dedicated to the people who encouraged the emotion. Given the chance she will readily pull her poems apart, exposing the deeper and hidden meanings behind her words.

Her stories are usually unspoken messages to those close to her – giving every story a hidden meaning. Some things are better left unsaid, or in her case, expressed indirectly through stories.

Jade used to write Documentation for Simple Machines in her free time, but has since begun studying and working, which takes up most of her free time now.

Whoops!

Yeah, I'm really bad with writing my own bios, so I haven't added one here. I seem to adjust it every time I use it, too, depending on who I'm showing the bio or what type of content it's attached to, etc.

Yeah I know the feeling. It should be seen as a sort of portfolio bio :D.

I don't have a bio.

I guess I'm a little anxious about writing one, because...I sort of wish for the story to speak for itself? I'm shy, I don't want anyone really knowing anything about me except that I write stories.  :P

Another part of it might be that I'm in a pretty transient time of my life, so I can't say "Elly lives in X with family members and pets" like so many writer's bios seem to think is necessary. I never know where I'll be in a fortnight! I don't know who I live with! Are they nice? I'm not dead yet so they must be.

The closest I can think of is a contributor's profile to a friend's website, where I basically described myself like Ofelia from the Pan's Labyrinth introduction with like subversive little joke at the end.

As I've only professionally published children's book to this date, my bio is kind of hard to write, because it must appeal both to parents and kids. I try to put basic things like my age, residence and the other books I've written, and then I add some trivia like "He once saw a UFO, but doesn't believe in those things".

I do have one or two Bios or profiles on some other sites, but I like yours Bunny. The reason I like it is because it makes you sound real authentic. Your warm comes through. One can tell you are a real person who is true to herself. i think I need to write a new one soon!

Love that last part! What about your bio here? No kids allowed lol.

Thank you!! :D

I think writing about it in 3rd person was the key for me, I was able to get what I thought across. Nevermind that it took me probably the better part of a week or more to do and I always edit it lol.

It's always different, because I don't publish often, so I have to update my bio every time. ;) The latest one says more or less this (in Spanish):

"Sebastián Lalaurette was born on the last day of 1974 in Lanús, Buenos Aires province. He's a journalist by day and becomes a writer by night. When he was a kid he already liked reading books, especially adventure and science fiction. He knew the Malaysia thanks to Emilio Salgari, the Moon thanks to Jules Verne and Middle-Earth thanks to J R R Tolkien. In time, another fantastic world grew into his head: Belisla, the scene for *Bellacrín and the Shadow*.

Some of his favourite heroes are the Mighty Hulk, Spider-Man and Hamlet, the prince of an antique legend. Among his favourite people he counts his three nephews: Rodrigo, Naím and Morena. That's why his first book was called *Rodrigo and the unfinished book* and the second, *Naím and the magician on the run*. And that's also why he's thinking of using the name Morena for the protagonist of some future book.

There are many things he enjoys in the world, among them eating a good stewpot, watching a good movie, and realizing that a boy or girl liked one of his books."

I've rewritten my bio several times and I keep a short one and a longer one for submissions. Some places have a specific word count, and others you need to use it to sell yourself. I often update mine and then cringe at what I have written before.

It's recommended to use the third person and I try to keep my catchy and brief. The bios on my blogs and websites are similar, though less detailed and quirkier. When I submit to a publisher I include what I am planning to work on as well as my current works in progress.
