So I want to get a tattoo with this phrase:
"Beware, so that his shadow cannot burden your sleep with horrible nightmares."
but, I've heard for many years now that online translators aren't completely correct.

Are they? Can I trust Google Translate? Or, does anyone know German and can help me out?

:D

Well it depends. I always translate what the translator gave to me back and then I just go with it. I may have a German friend I can ask for help though!

Don't trust it! For small things sure, but for a tattoo you realllllly don't want to mess it up!

Yeah, like the tattoos not going to happen for a few weeks, so there's PLENTY of time to sort things out. I asked on Yahoo answers and I got a two of the same answer that's different than the buttholes that posted the GT phrase. I have a friend that took like a thousand German classes in high school, so I'm gonna ask her and she if she can get it. But if anyone here could help, I'd love you forever! :D

Google translator is rather tricky so I wouldn't trust it so easily. I wonder if there'are any better online translators?

Honestly I wouldn't trust an online translator. I would find people who spoke the language and ask them to write it out for me. Then I would find more and ask them too. I would take it to 3 places and if I got the same answer everywhere I would then trust it. It's permanent, after all lol.

I agree with Bunny - I've never trusted the translators. I've seen some weird stuff with them, and I don't think they're really designed to be balls-on accurate.

You might need to slip someone a few bucks to get a clean translation, but if it's going under your skin I'd say it's money well-spent.

I totally agree. Translators are not perfect but Google Translator is a good free service translator for simple words. Also, if you really need a translator, maybe you can ask a friend to translate for you. In addition, if you don't want to go the free method and want something translated really fast, there are some programs out there that cost a lot but are kind of worth it.

LOL, this was too funny. Hm.. What kind of translator did they use because those words don't mean courage. I wonder what would have happened afterwards.

Probably either a lot of painful laser-removal sessions or a radical adjustment of lifestyle.  ;)

I wouldn't trust Google Translate 100% because it does have its flaw. I have tried using it many times, but most of the time the translation is wrong. I don't trust any translation software because I try not to rely too much on it, not to mention Google Translate only gives people an idea of how the translation will look like.

Google Translate can be good for translating single items of vocabulary or for translating short sentences from foreign language into ours, to get a grasp of what they mean. However, translating big sentences from your native language into the language you don't know and then tattooing the result on yourself would be pretty foolish. There aren't any perfect online translators and having a tattoo with an error in it would be rather embarassing.

I took the sentence you wanted and then used Google Translate to translate it into Polish, my native language. What I got was:
"Strzeżcie się, żeby jego cień nie może obciążać sen z okropnych koszmarów".
which is, well, not correct. The closest it could be is "Strzeżcie się, żeby jego cień nie mógł obciążyć waszego snu okropnymi koszmarami". And there could be some better translations, really (I don't feel like "obciążyć" is the best possible verb to use here, but I can't really think of anything better right now). So, as you can see, using Google Translate to translate a complex sentence will most likely end badly.

So, in short, I hope you haven't done that :P

Yeah, and some words change meaning with context - a translator may not pick that up unless it's a person.

Think if I ever get this tattoo, it'll just be in English. :P

About Plastic
Hello! My name is Nic, and I write words and things that rhyme sometimes... just like that! :3

I'm inspired by basically anything and everything. Legends, folklore, and mythology, personal experiences, and things-that-could-be-a-children's-poem-turned-macabre are a few of things I like to write about the most.
On the other side of my writing spectrum, is my love of movies. I wish to be a screenwriter some day, so... movies are pretty important to me.

I have an extremely healthy obsession with the four elements (Earth, Air, Water, and Fire), and Tegan and Sara.
Thank you for reading my words, it really means the world!
