Well, I don't like most poetry.  Even more than the usual 95% of things you tend not to like because they're crap.  The only few poems I can think of that I really liked were The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe and Warning to Children by Robert Graves, oh and The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost.

Most others I just really don't care for.  What's everyone else's thoughts on poetry?

I LOVE FROST!!!!! :D

I like poetry. I wouldnt go buy a book on it though, not unless I really liked the author or it was dark poetry. I tend to like dark poetry more than others.

Something just dawned on me....why do you think they're crap?

I generally can't stand the stuff either. It mostly goes into the same place as philosophical discussions on how "deep" something like, say, Evangelion is.

Poetry is not automatically 'deep'. And if it's a window into half of the writer's souls that I can see, then if a said soul exists, it's filled with worthless piles of teenage angst and pretentious douchebaggery. Sure, there can be glowing notes in there, but too many people take poetry to mean that it's automatically from the soul and should be respected, or loved, or treated with care just because it exists.

It's the same way with a lot of fanfiction. Depressing, really. All of it.

Hmm?  95% of everything is crap.  Novels, anime, video games, everything I mean.  Though I think they're crap mostly because they're overbilled as being some deep philosophical insight when the poem is actually just a simplistic word game.

I mainly favor poetry as a form of expression, which is why i tend to favor pretty much all art forms. If poetry can express some new insight or make me think in a way that i never thought before then i enjoy the piece.

Also, The Raven scared the shit out of me. >.>

I like poetry because it is an art form. It's one of the only ways that I can express myself and if some people like it, then this is a really great bonus. If you do not like it, don't read it. (That wasn't meant to sound as harsh as it did) But the fact that coincidently people like the way I express myself makes me show people, not to be a poet necessarily.

I can see the art in it, but I suppose it's that most poetry tells a story that I just don't care to hear.  Some of the morbid poetry--and I mean well done morbid poetry, such as The Raven or The Road Not Taken--do intrigue me.  Other than that I see little value in it past the exercise in wordplay.

hmm intriguing.
I like that form of poetry too, but I enjoy deciphering the story other poetry tells.
I guess if you are not interesting in knowing the story, then you aren't going to be interested in the poetry.

I like poetry, I like writing it, but sometimes reading it can be painful, most poetry that I read is good, but others I can do without reading.

Poetry is an art form, yes. Food is an art form too, but slapping words together like you're pouring gravy onto carrots at a free Las Vegas buffet tends to take the art out of it.

True.

But you also have to take into account that not everything is as it seems. That gravy might have been hand made with a secret recipe, and those carrots arranged in such a way as to form Mickey Mouse's head from 3 stories up.

Same with words, sometimes they feel slapped together, but you never know if that was the intent, or if you're missing the plot of it lol.

You're falling into the whole Modern Art movement here.  Where shitting in a bucket isn't just a disgusting act, it's also a beautiful and poignant look at the state of the marine conservation movement that could be compared to Thoreau's Walden in the conjuring of urges to help the environment.

You can claim that all you want, it's still a bucket full of feces, and it's still disgusting.  Modern Art can blow me.  Same goes for Modern Poetry.

Storm puts it right, here. Anyone can make a pile of shit and say it has deep philosophical meaning. Damned if I won't call you on it, though. Especially when all I see is a bucket of feces.

I actually quite like modern art. Don't get me wrong, I still appreciate the works of the greats, but there is a story of interpretation in modern art that I adore.

Oh my stars, poetry and I have had a hate, hate, hate, sort of hate a little less, slight appreciation, sorta enjoy relationship.

The hate was mostly misunderstanding and having been forced to read poetry I didn't like in high school. Those experiences made me assume I hated poetry for a long time.

Then someone made me read (and write! Yikes!) poetry and I slowly warmed up to it. I'm a fan of poetry now! But I have certain styles that I like and some that I still don't understand.

Traci Brimhall is one of my fav modern poets. Anyone heard of her?

It is VERY rare that I enjoy reading poetry. To be honest I find most poetry hard to understand or difficult to get what the message is. My first language isn't English so for me to read a poem and read big/confusing words and trying to decode what the poem means gets a bit annoying.

However I do like simple poetry, ones that get straight to the point and you don't have to "read between the lines" or guess what the message is or what they are trying to say.

It really just depends. Most poetry is crap, no doubt, but like said above... most everything fits that category.

I feel like with poetry that I mostly have to be in the mood for it regardless. I don't just randomly read it and love it.

It depends on the poetry rather i like it or not. I like some poets, Poe and Byran are my favorites.  It has to make sense to me though. There are a lot of poets now days, I think it is called modern poetry, and they just seem to say random stuff. I do not understand that at all. If its something that I can understand, or better yet relate to then I enjoy the poem.

I like poetry that has a structure. Call me old fashioned, but I like it to either rhyme or follow a pattern, like the sonnets. I love most of Shakespeare's sonnets, and I've written some myself that I'm happy with. At the risk of sounding like a sycophant, I like most of the poetry I've read of Jade's, because it says something to me. A poem is so much more than an arrangement of words.

Call me superficial, but I also love humorous poetry, like Pam Ayres' stuff, or Carol Ann Duffy's.

Awww thank you! I put messages in mine, still working on meter in some parts ha ha.

I like poetry when it's dark or opens my mind to another point of view, and yes humourous poetry rocks! :D

Most people don't like poetry because they don't understand it well. Generally, anything hard to understand is disliked. To be honest, I hated it when I was in high school. It felt totally unreasonable to me. When I finished school, I learnt to enjoy poetry because I felt no pressure to read it. Poetry can be really great and it's possible to have fun finding various poems' interpretations.

I don't mind poetry as long as it makes sense. I have read some poems that I don't really get the point of writing them.

You know, I had to think about this... I'm not that drawn to poetry either, but I think it's because I'm not very good at writing it. I do appreciate a well-written, thought-provoking poem, however. So I don't hate it, but it's not my favorite form of writing, either.

I'm not a fan of poetry.  I have a complex relationship with it.  I like some, hate others.  I liked form poetry for the longest time until I figured out it came about by pretentious nobles in the middle ages trying to seem creative.

I can't believe someone negated 95% of all poetry! Have you never read Rumi?

I love, love, love poetry! Its language in its most beautiful form! HOWEVER, I realize that there is really droned out babble out there that has turned some people against it!

I'm kind of "meh" on poetry, to be honest. Ted Hughes (who I've only recently started reading) is pretty good! I like the kind of language he uses. Others I don't care for. I think the rhymes and beats sound cool, but it's unlikely to get an emotional response out of me. UNLESS it is being read by this guy

Great film. Heart Wrenching scene. The poem on its own is ok, but when being read it's brilliant.

The stars are not wanted now, put out every one. Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun. Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood. For nothing now can ever come to any good.

I used to read a lot of poetry because I did speech and Drama whilst at school so I would often do readings of various poems. I will say that when I was doing the readings I wasn't a fan of poetry but now that I don't really read any my opinion has changed and I really like it.

I like it, I read it, I write it...but I'm not always in a mood for it so I think I can sort of see where people come from when they say they don't like poetry.

Poetry is like...words for words' own sake, sometimes. Like eating soup because you like the taste of the spoon. Some people (and some people sometimes, so maybe I'm speaking for myself) prefer that the medium become a transparent means, so that the meaning of what's being said comes through more directly. Poetry, on the other hand, is rarely natural.

But then again, sometimes that very connection itself is described as "poetry" even if there's no actual literal poem.

I can appreciate it and won't say I think it's bad, but I wouldn't say I like it. Definitely not my thing.

I think she's saying that sometimes there's just something we aren't getting. God knows I don't get what the hell half of these people are doing. And while I agree with your shit in a bucket theory (couldn't have said it better myself actually), there must be some exceptions. I'm sure there are.
