Several of the suspected September 11th terrorists are to stand trial In New York City.  There is great debate over whether they should be tried by the U.S. Court system or by military tribunal.

I personally like the idea of them standing trial here.  Imagine their horror at sitting in a courtroom in the very country they sought to destroy.  Imagine the dawning of the realization that they failed at doing what they set out to do.  Held accountable by the very citizenry they attempted to muzzle.  Not only would it be a triumph of the American Justice system, but a triumph of the values we hold as Americans.

Let’s show them that despite their horrific actions, that we as a nation have prevailed.  The acts of terror they perpetrated were futile and prove it to them the American way. A jury of American citizens holding those accused fates in their hands.  It is such a powerful statement.

It is a bit of poetic justice to me.

Some think that by allowing them to set foot on our soil will make them martyrs for their cause.  I don’t see it that way, on the contrary, I think it shows them how miserably they failed.  For had they not failed they wouldn’t be sitting in defendant seats in an American courtroom.

Trying them by military tribunal would probably not be as public, and may instead, make them bigger martyrs in the eyes of their followers.  There would always be a question by some whether they were tried fairly, which in turn would give them more fodder for spewing venom. I don’t want that.

Let’s leave no question as to what actually goes on in their trial.  Let’s rob from the fanatics the ability to twist and spin what America stands for, by showing the trials for the whole world to see.
