I'm my own worst enemy when it comes to procrastinating. When it comes to working at home, that can be horrible especially.

So how do you avoid procrastinating?

I can write all the lists in the world, set all the goals I can imagine, and off myself the best rewards, and if I feel like procrastinating, that's what I'll do anyway, ha.

I try to set a time when i'm going to start my work. I'll work for about an hour then get up and due something i enjoy then go back to working. I listen to music while working also, to make it more enjoyable. Setting little goals helps to. Like: 'o'm going to do this ... but only after finishing this much work!'
Good luck on not procrastinating!

Problem with the little goals is that I don't have the will power to actually earn them ha ha. Making work fun is a good idea too :D.

Welcome to BRS by the way! :D

I think procrastination is built into the writer's DNA - it's something we're all guilty of at some time or another. I don't really have a strategy to deal with it, other than giving myself a good talking to. Then I get interested in what I'm saying and procrastinate some more ...

I think you're right about it being built in to a writer's DNA. I don't think I've ever met a writer who doesn't hit procrastination walls. Even if they want to write, it doesn't mean it'll actually happen *right now.*

I must say that I am truly happy that I am not the procrastinating type. I love to get started on things right away. I do have my slower days as well. These days are only because I may feel overworked and tired. Like always, I do get it done shortly after. If you have a procrastination problem, the best thing to do is set up energizing things around the house or office. I placed pictures and words all over my house on looseleaf. When I feel a bit lazy I resort to them. I am so ready to go after that.

Ha ha no worries! I really do, I have a lot of trouble with health and sometimes procrastination really hurts rather than makes me feel better these days!

I'm such a procrastinator, I haven't even started procrastinating yet. I'll get around to that next weekend.

I can't avoid it - I just have to embrace it.  :P Nah, I jest, but I a terrible for procrastinating an entire day away. I often find that writing a to-do list helps me get things done though.

I'm one of the worst procrastinators. I'll be in the middle of writing when all of a sudden I'll stop to search for entertainment news or play a game. One thing that helps my procrastination is setting up a schedule. I'll assign a certain time for work and another time for relaxation.

I find that I'm more productive with little breaks like that.

I'm so bad about it, too! I work from home and my time is limited because I also homeschool my 5 kidlets. Facebook drags me in. Then Twitter. Then Bubblews. I procrastinated this proofreading project for days and then knocked it out in under 3 hours no problem and made good money. WHY did I put it off? Currently I've been procrastinating sending queries to national parenting magazines for years. Why don't I just do it?

In school I was the one in the library at midnight trying to cram for a test or write a paper due the next day.  I do it today in everyday life - waiting to do laundry, leaving dishes in the sink, etc.  The worst is when I have put a load into the washer and forget about it for a day or two and then have to rewash the load.

When I was doing my University course, I found that I would do almost anything to avoid the things that I needed to do. But that meant that when it came to final deadlines, I would struggle to get the work in on time, and that would cause me a lot of stress. For that reason, after the most stressful assignment ever, I decided that I would not procrastinate anymore, and that I would do things as and when they needed to be done.

I have found that my life has been much better since I have made this decision. Firstly, it means that when I have finished my work for the day, I can enjoy the things that I am doing a lot more. If I did the things that I enjoyed first, then there is a high chance that the things that I was supposed to be doing would be on my mind instead, and that means that I wouldn't enjoy them as much.

I also find that it helps to have goals that you're working towards. If you're a student then that goal is easy: passing your exams and gaining a good qualification. That's a great thing to work towards, and if you don't have the motivation to succeed then perhaps you shouldn't be on the course at all. If you're an adult, and you're getting things done, then you need to think about the future, and about what could be better if you did everything that you were supposed to. For example, I am saving up for a house at the moment, and I have found that thinking about this is enough to keep me motivated while I am working. I am a freelancer, so I don't have anybody telling me what to do, meaning that I have to do it on my own. I am much better than I used to be.

Procrastinating is really a way of self sabotaging one's life.  Its also a way of creating chaos in your life as well.  The only way to stop procrastinating is to set a schedule, one with reasonable tasks and time frames and adhere to it.  Start small and each week add a few more items to your list.

I used to procrastinate when comes to homework and other personal things. I have learned the best way to avoid procrastination is to make a due date myself, no matter how busy I am because life is always busy to some extend. I always plan and schedule my tasks, so I can finish them on time. I guess being procrastinate has made me a lazy person because I always forget things that way.

The amount of puns in this thread is crazy, I was going to think of my own but I'll just do that later....

My biggest piece of advice is to have a room where pretty much all you do in that room is work. It can be anywhere but it can't have a TV or any other distractions I use my dining room. Then just get into the habit of when you enter that room you work. Also there are a few apps you can use to block certain websites for an hour or two while you work. But I have forgotten their names as I write this. But they are out there if using FaceBook or Reddit is a big problem for you.

hope this helps :)

I've learned to not even try to set deadlines for myself. I just do stuff whenever I feel like doing them and avoid the guilt of not doing stuff when I was supposed to lol.
