We all love a good opening to a novel, and every once in a while a really good or unusual first line can stay with me for a long time.

My favourite is "I am born", from Dickens' David Copperfield.  It's such a short line, and by itself it doesn't mean an awful lot, but in terms of how the rest of that story grows from that one line, it's amazing.

What first line/good openers have stayed with you?

From my favorite Harry Potter book = Deathly Hallows: "The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane."

Reading this line when I first got the book after falling in line for a day in the bookstore gave me goosebumps! Those were the good days. :)

I don't have any particular examples coming right into my mind; however, I think that an opening line that actually draws you right into the story is what I like the best.
Some books seem to start with some kind of a background, and it takes forever before you actually get into the "good part" of the story. I have almost given up on some books that turned out to be really great books, just because it took so long before there was actually anything interesting to read.

In those cases, there is usually some little thing that is critical to the rest of the story; but I missed it while skimming through the beginning; so then I have to go back and read the introduction at some later point in the book when it becomes important to the plot.
Books that start out with some kind of action going on, just grab your attention from the start, and pull you on into the story from the beginning on.

About KittyK
I've been writing since I was a child, and I still love writing today.  I've amassed an impressive amount of work over the years, but I remain unpublished.  Why?  I lack the confidence to get my work out there and try my luck at making it in the world of writing.

Whilst I wait for myself to climb out of this phase, I'm going to at least try to put some of my work up on the Kindle platform....That can't be too scary now, can it??

Writing Style
Thriller, some romance, poetry, stage plays, radio drama.
