I know this is going to sound like a really CRAZY question...but does anyone here believe vampires exist?

I do.  They're all over nature...ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, vampire bats even...but what about something that looks and acts like a human being, but isn't?

Not saying I believe in walking corpses...but I know there are these...things...creatures...that walk and talk like a human being but aren't.  The reason I say this is because my hubby and had a run in with one many years ago. It is a LONG story, and I may write it another time, but the person was freaky. Did not cast a shadow, smelled like a dead carcass and was wearing winter clothing during high Summer and NOT sweating a drop.

Scared the shit out of my hubby and me. To this day we feel we barely got away with our humanity and lives.  :S

Ha ha there's a disorder that makes you thirst for blood/raw meat but I don't think it goes much past that.

I believe in vampires as a concept, what with so much fiction surrounding them--like a pearl that doesn't even have  grain of sand at its core anymore that would have started the pearl's formation, but it's solid.

One carry-over from the olden days, I believe, that should be lost by now is the concept that they are undead.

I mean... they're written as so sexy. And they move around and have autonomy and stuff. What's the point? Only "Snow, Glass, Apples" by Neil Gaiman made it necessary for a vampire to be dead. Otherwise, they can sparkle in the sun for all the story cares.

So, people talk about "emotional vampires" or "psychic vampires" who are just exhausting emotionally and mentally to deal with, perhaps less supernaturally and more because they just rub you wrong but not overtly enough that you can snap back. Really, though, they're just immensely irritating humans.

I can also believe that in the olden days people didn't bury their dead very well, wild animals who were scavengers would smell something rotting, dig it up a little, and make people panic the next day when they found an arm halfway out of the grave looking as if the dead person wanted to crawl out, and then started thinking up of all sorts of things: vampires, zombies, ghouls...

All can be true, and some other stuff in between. (Oh, yeah... I forgot about Porphyria! Thanks, Bunny.) Basically, what I don't believe in is that it's one specific thing only. I think they can still be called vampires if they sparkle in the sun.

Okay two things...

1. YES. I don't think they can be counted as undead anymore. More....immortal?

I know they have to die to transform but they wake up so one could argue that they therefore are alive again....and in transition. Maybe the undead argument was because they died, but didn't. Also they aren't human anymore because they transitioned.

2. The "sparkle" thing is actually wrong. She said the flakes of skin burning off of his body made it appear to sparkle. He's not glittering, he's burning up and pieces of his skin are flying off him on fire.

This...thing...we ran into didn't sparkle, flake, or anything of the sort. He wasn't sexy...he looked like an old farmer man. Except he stank like he'd been wallowing in something dead. He wasn't sweating and he did NOT cast a shadow! He was wearing WINTER clothing in 100 degree weather and wasn't sweating a drop. Walking around in the DAYLIGHT. Older tales of these things said they DID walk around during the day...but they were weaker during daylight hours.

Frankly, my hubby and I don't know what else fits. The store is a long one...and I have debated on writing it but I haven't because a lot of people just would NOT believe it. I've only told a very few folks...mentioned it on a paranormal site once...but it scares the fuck out of me. This has been about 15 years ago this happened...and to this day it still just scares me to even think there is something right here in an area of Kentucky that could well be something that very well could be what these legends are based on.

I think all this romanticizing something that is...NOT...sexy or any thing like this "teen vamp angst" and Lestat wanna-be's shit...well, it would make it awfully easy for the real thing to roam around wouldn't it? Because no one really believes in them. But, what if they do exist?

We don't know what we met that day...but I'm really wondering if maybe there is some truth to myths and legends...there usually is. I don't know if they are immortal...not sure they are alive in the usual sense either. I just have no idea. Whatever it is...it's real. It exists. Do I think there could be some sort of weird, fucked up retro-virus that could transform the DNA of a human being and create a new being? I don't see why not. Evolutionary mutations happen all the time in Nature.

You know I am in a vampire book, an Australian girl I met on a dating site wrote a book and asked to use my traits etc as a main vampire in a book she was writing, I said yes and she sent me a copy and got me quite well, wonder if I still have it or if the book got published ... lost contact with her like 6 years ago

I've seen no evidence to suggest such an occurrence. It would be cool as hell though, nobody would talk to you and you could be in peace haha.

I been doing a LOT of research over the years...and STILL doing a lot of research and me hubby and I have come to the conclusion that there are things in this world that just defy what we call rational explanation. Was the old bugger a vampire? A ghoul? A fucking zombie? I don't know.  What I do know, without any doubts, is that he wasn't in any since a normal human being.

Normal human beings don't smell like something dead, unless they've been working with dead things or rolling in something dead. Not even when a person hasn't bathed in a long while do they stink like a dead carcass. Normal people don't wear Winter clothing in high Summer when it's 90 fucking degrees in the shade...they also sweat like a nun in a whorehouse. Oh, and the big one...normal people CAST A FUCKING SHADOW when they are in the sun...at whatever freaking angle. This...thing...didn't do ANY of those normal, everyday, human being things that jibe with basic laws of science and physics.

I don't really care if anyone believes me or not...me mate and I know that we had an encounter with something that wasn't in any sense of the word a normal HUMAN creature...and we hope like hell to never have to deal with anything like that again.

Okay so! You've never lived with someone who has never bathed, and they do start smelling like dead things. Especially if their home is just as messy and has animals. Their mess begins to smell like dead things. I've been around enough dead things to know what that smells like having grown up on a farm :(.

Anyway, in the desert people wear really thick clothing and cover all but their eyes because it actually keeps them cool and free from the sun harming them. So this idiot might not have been sweating because he was actually cooler than you thought he was :P.

As for the shadow, no idea! ha ha

Okay...no, I don't tend to live with filthy people who have forgotten what soap is for. I been around dead meat before...so I do know what that smells like. +o)

As for the non-sweating issue...high humidity is going to make anyone sweat...anyone normal anyway. Deserts aren't know for having much in the way of humidity...so wearing heavy, loose clothing to protect from the sand and sun would work very well in the desert...not so much in the very high humidity of Kentucky.

Yep, that whole lack of shadow issue is the biggie. Total disregard for normal laws of physics right there. I really don't know what the old bugger is...I just REALLY do not want to run into something like that again. I don't think I can begin to convey just how fucking SCARED we were. It STILL scares the hell out of me.  :S

Dead meat or dead animal? There's a distinct difference that I can't explain. Dead animal is sharper and still has hints of fur and stuff in it.

Is it comparable to GA? Because I could reach a point where my body was so hot it felt cold and I would shiver and not sweat. Weirdness!

I just found this Top 10 List of vampires from history you've never heard of except that I have heard of Elizabeth Bathory and why is her picture on the list that of a goth/emo supermodel?  Anyway...

The Alnwick Castle Vampire was the eeriest for me. I hadn't heard about that one before. It was more descriptive than conclusive because they didn't have a word for vampire back then.

Number 10 is terrifying.
Number 8 is terrifying because it wasn't killed.
Number 7 is really terrifying.

You know thinking about these stories is quite terrifying because literally anyone could be one...or not?

Also re the last one, Elizabeth Bathory, I had a blood nose in the past that literally filled a sink before the ambulance came and stopped it. The sink was so full we had to use a piece of wire to pull the plug out. Now, when the blood went down there was nothing but clots in there and it was just the nastiest thing I'd ever seen, I almost vomited. So if she really did bathe in blood she's foul lol.

I have read some of the stories about people who have become sort of a vampire type of person, I think it was usually drug-induced. They thought they should consume blood or human flesh, or whatever.
As far as a dead person not being dead, and coming back to life as a vampire; I don't think that is possible. You are either dead or you aren't dead.
However, back in the past, bodies were not embalmed, and people who were actually in some sort of coma were sometimes buried; and could have been totally demented by the time they dug their way out of a grave.

Another possibility that I can kind of see, is that they are not from this earth. There are some interesting stories about people encountering aliens, and I don't think we can exclude the possibility of one of those having vampire tendencies.
Hoodoo, what ever you saw sounds scary, and I don't think I would want to run across this guy, regardless of what he actually was. I live in the South, too; so I know what you mean about the humidity. Even when I go outside in the cooler morning hours, I am soon dripping perspiration from my forehead, just because of the humidity.

Wow why didn't I think of that? That's a completely awesome and terrifying concept!

I have always believed that anything and everything is possible. However, when it comes to vampires, I believe that they exist, but not like how popular media portrays them. They neither sparkle nor glamour people, so they won't remember. There are vampires everywhere - those who suck your energy, those who drain you of happiness, etc. They don't just feed on blood, emotions, too. I know that sounds crazy, but we are all vampires in our own ways.

Since we do not know what "visitors" we might have had from another galaxy over the thousands of years that man has lived here on the earth; I think we would be reimiss if we didn't also conside the possibility of what we call a vampire coming from somewhere besides our planet.
We have some very unexplainable things that happen here, and they are also blamed on aliens from spaceships.

Consider, first of all, the cattle mutilations. We don't hear of those as often as we used to; but I think it is just that it is no longer an mindblowing story when someone reports.
These cows are not just chopped up cows. There is a pattern to what happens to these cattle, and it is always a similar thing, regardless as to where on the earth the mutilation takes place.
The animal is often found in a burned-looking circle, and there is no blood like there would be if this were simply an attack by wild animals or even by cattle thieves.

Another mostly unexplained thing are the strange circles found uually in large fields, and called "crop circles. Though some of these have been proved to be a hoax, there are many that are still a mystery.
These are only part of the strange and unexplainable things that happen , and it seems to me that some sort of a vampire alien is also possible.

Actually cow mutilation has been scientifically explained and replicated exactly multiple times :D.

http://www.cracked.com/article_19205_10-famous-unsolved-mysteries-easily-explained-by-science.html
Quote
In the 1970s, the ATF and even the FBI investigated the cattle-mutilation phenomenon. Their results? They found no evidence of anything other than natural causes and the occasional psychopath. No cult activity, no aliens, no monsters.

Natural causes that appear as surgical wounds? What about the removed organs? How is that possible? In most cases, scavengers such as foxes, buzzards and other critters that like beef au natural saunter by the decomposing corpse and have a bite or two -- thus the organ removal.

The surgical look comes later, when insects chew at the edges of the wounds. See, flies like soft foods, because flies don't have teeth. Same reason we go to Taco Bell: no standards and less work. And also much like Taco Bell, they prefer the softer parts of the animal: eyes, tongues, genitals, anuses and the rough edges of those aforementioned scavenger wounds. Also, if the animal's been lying around for long enough (or even short periods in the hot sun), it'll bloat and burst open, often with very clean, surgical-looking tears. And then come the maggots, which eat anything they can get their little teeth on.

They'll chew up whatever's left of those organs and drink the animal's blood, which typically pools to the bottom of the corpse, giving it that nice, cleanly drained look. Look, don't believe us (we certainly don't make a habit out of it), but what better way to demonstrate than a little field experiment? In 1979, an Arkansas sheriff named Herb Marshall got a bunch of complaints about cattle mutilation in his jurisdiction. So he got the idea to take a dead cow, plop it down in a field and film it for 48 hours in what was undoubtedly the worst two-day stakeout since Another 48 Hrs. After the elements and various creatures were done with it, the stakeout cow was indistinguishable from any other animal that had been "mutilated."

Bunny, did you even LOOK at the link I posted ? (My dear friend who LOVES links) I know that the government tries to explain away anything unusual that happens. Any UFO's that people see are only "swamp gas" or some such thing.
These cows and horses change overnight----- a matter of a few HOURS. not the days or weeks it would take for natural decomposition to happen to the corpse.

Think about it ! If an animal dies naturally overnight, and you find it the next morning; what is the likelihood that multiple scavengers  have already removed the toungue, sex organs, other parts, and not even so much as chewed anywhere else ?  Even further.... what is the likelihood of this happening over and over ?
The first thing a predator eats is the internal organs, hearts, lungs, kidneys; "tasty" stuff like that.  They do not just start chewing the udder (which is tough and rubbery) from a cow.

There ARE things that really happen that are unexplainable and government coverups are a well-known thing.  Check out Linda Moulton Howe. She has studied these things for years now.
Ostriches are native to Africa, not Australia.....

They may be from Uranus....

OK, seriously; that is the question that remains to be answered; but this discussion IS about strange things like vampires; so I am thinking that pretty much anything goes in this one.
Who knows why the Sphinx is here, or even the pyramids for that matter. Easter Island and the strange statues there. Or the Nazca lines that are found in South America.
Why does Egyptian hieroglyphs  (and even some cave writings) have pictures that look like space ships and astronauts ?
Explain all of those, and then we can talk more about why aliens take a cow's anus....

Maybe god is an alien ha ha.

Or, maybe we've been scared of them for goddamn centuries ha ha. There's pictures of unicorns and dragons and we haven't found those. No reason to believe they are real because someone drew them. Maybe they stand for "pretend" or "strange"?

There are definitely mysteries everywhere for sure.

I reckon they take the anus for hair ties. Hair ties must be hard to come by in space ;).

Vampires as in Dracula and the whole Twilight Saga are things I do not believe in. When the body is dead, it's dead, but the soul can go onto another realm. The physical body will decompose and scientifically nothing can stop that unless they use cryonics.

There are people around who are like zombies, with no soul or any motivation to 'live' or do anything. Sometimes I feel like a zombie!

I do have a theory though 8-), that if there was no shadow, it is possible it could have been a spirit that was manifested and it was visible to you. Not all spirits are visible and they would not cast a shadow, like a ghost but in a whole form.

As for the smell, it could be how he was when he died. Sometimes you can smell spirits as well. It's a theory, as some people can smell or see spirits or both.

Damned certain it wasn't a spirit...too solid for that. Two kids, my dullard sister and my hubby and I were there and we ALL saw him, talked to him...but me hubby and I were the only one's who noticed the anomalies because we pay attention to our surroundings. LOL

I've smelled enough dead meat to know the difference between a really whiffy critter and the stink of decomposing meat. I used to work in a deli and I just HATED going into the butcher's room. It's the reason I am a vegetarian...that stink is just...foul. The idea of putting something in my bod that could stink like that just grosses me out.

Like I said y'all, I have NO idea what this..."person"...was. Just seems that "vampire", as crazy as that shit sounds, was the only thing that fit. I read that link to Listverse and that was...disturbing.

Gods...it gives the screamin' squeems just thinking about it.

Maybe he was a butcher...OF PEOPLE MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA (666)

That said ghosts can appear solid and interact with multiple people, and ghosts do commonly smell. Some say the smell of poo is synonymous with the devil or a demon, so I can only imagine what rotting meat/flesh would be!

I've seen ghosts that are mostly see through, almost solid, and solid but white washed if that makes sense.
