Below is a list of contests and publishers or agencies to avoid and it was originally compiled by Winning Writers. These are scams to put it plainly and are just out to take your money, while they will not bring you any kind recognition in the writing world. So if you come across a contest sponsored by one of these, or an ad for an agency from this list, just close the browser window as fast as possible. It is incredibly lowly to prey on hardworking, severely underpaid poets, but this list is nevertheless very long. Hopefully none of you have fallen prey to any of these cons, but at least now you know what to avoid in the future.

Yeah, I think we've all fallen for poetry.com I thought it was official because it was POETRY.com, not some cheap knock-off name. I mean, the address was POETRY! Ah, the mistakes of youth (youth being five years ago lol)

Lol it also looks official.....but I got the hint when BOTH poems I submitted "won"...and I believe they would only be published IF I paid for the book....

lol yeah. I actually bought the book. Took over a year to come lol Maybe two. Then I looked at some of the poems and they SUCKED (some were pretty awesome, though).

Thanks for the list.  It is sad that it is such a LONG list.  I will also pass the list along to my sister.  She is a writer also, more so than I actually.  Although her genre is primarily Christian oriented, if she ever branches out I'm sure she would appreciate a list like this.

I, too, fell prey to one of these scammers and if I am not mistaken, it was Poetry.com. It sounds official as hell and I won! As I did not spring for the book, I'm sure my poem (not my best) was omitted. I think there was a time constraint so I just threw in this poem, last minute. Imagine my surprise when that simple little poem from 1975 won! Had I underestimated my poem, my talent? HAHAHA!
My husband at the time, wanted to send for it but I held back. A dear freind recently told me he was a published author---this was the deal. I didn't have the heart to tell him it was a scam to sell anthologies. He was so happy.

I "fell" for the poetry.com one, but never bought the book (I never buy anything like that, because I'm too darn frugal).  I was young and naive.

Now adays you can do a quick google search and find out if things are scams (I usually just append scam to the site or contest name and get lots of good results).  If you want to be published, stick with publishers.  If you think you will make it big by winning a contest, you are pinning your hopes to something that is highly unlikely to happen.

I tried Poetry.com once, too! Grr... It was a very frustrating experience! Thank you for compiling this list. I sometimes have a difficult time recognizing the legitimate sites from the scams. At least with this list, I will know which ones to avoid.
