I often think the "villain" is more interesting than the hero, particularly since they get a better back story. I have to say, I loved Snape in the Harry Potter series because he could always be counted on for a good one-liner. It got even better when they cast Alan Rickman to play him in the movies. I would say I don't read a lot of books that would necessarily have a bad guy, but I do love the twisted, conflicted villains in television and movies. Have you watched Once Upon a Time? Rumplestiltskin/Mr Gold is a fascinating character. He can be good one moment, than evil the next, and utterly self serving at other times, yet he's my favorite character over someone like Snow who is good all of the time.
