I totally agree. Don't stay in this place too long as you get used to it and then you may never leave. This  means you will miss out on some wonderful opportunities that await you if you venture into the big wide and wonderful world on your own.

I just wanted to add, cause I left it out, I think the "insignificant other" title and concept is rather genius .

I am so sorry that you went through something like this, it is the worst thing I can imagine. However, since you are able to recognize it, and know that it is not deserved, then get out and feel full of life again!!

I just want to say that I think that was extremely well said.  I especially like how you pinned him on using an empty word to express his feelings for you.  Anyone can say the words "I love you."  It takes real love however, to do more than just say the words, and to live a life that shows your love in action.  Too bad that so few people really seem to get that, and if they do, how often they (we) seem to forget it. A lot of women have lived your life, settling for what we think is right and all we can get because that is what we've been brought up to believe.  My own mother was a mail order bride from East Germany; she never met my dad until he met her in Montreal after she got off a ship that she sailed to Canada on.  She entered into a marriage of necessity not of love and she made the best of it.  Not all marriages like that turn out as well as my parents did and even though they ended up happy enough, I know my mother never experienced romantic love.
You have the soul of an artist by the sounds of your words and deserve to be loved creatively and with passion.  I hope these days are seeing you happy and well and experiencing some of what you missed in the past.  Don't settle, I've always told my daughter that to settle is to live in regret for what might have been.  It is better to be alone that with someone you are not meant to be with, when the right one comes along you will know it.
