We are looking for researcher/writers to help us create travel-guide entries for ports of call visited by popular cruise lines. The entries will be very much like those you might find in any travel book, but focused specifically on cruise-goers (i.e., people who are on a several day trip, visiting for 6-12 hours, focused on activities not available on a cruise ship, etc.). We are looking for original content, not scraped off of existing travel guides or wikitravel (though those sources may, of course, be used to structure your research). All together, we’re looking for 1500-2500 words as described below. Some of this information is common knowledge (like the history of the port), but most of it needs to be verified. We expect you to verify all of the factual information you include (phone numbers, hours, etc.).This is a trial project, if we like your work we would be interested in engaging you for up to 70 additional ports of call with similar requirements. Our timeframe for the trial project is 1-2 weeks. For this trial, we'd like you to write up an entry for the port of Ocho Rios, Jamaica.Brief overview50-100 words describing the port of call and *what differentiates it* from other ports of call in the Caribbean (for instance, great shopping, higher duty-free limits, excellent golf course, unique ruins, etc.)Overview2-3 paragraphs summarizing what the town is primarily known for, the “best” things to do there, basic geography, where the cruise ships dock, and how to get into town. For instance, paragraph 2 & 3 of this description would be appropriate (paragraph 1 is a little long):
http://www.silversea.com/destinations/find-a-port/?port=THSTourism One paragraph each (these can be just a few sentences) on places that a tourist might go and see, for instance: architecture, monuments, churches, museums, ruins. Each entry should include the name of the sight, a brief description about why it is appealing, any tips necessary to enjoy the experience, hours it’s open, admission costs, and a phone number for more info. The number of entries should be based on the port of call, but most places should have 3-7 entries.OutdoorsJust like “tourism” but focused on outdoor activities like beaches, golf, hikes, etc. Again, each entry should include the name of the sight, a brief description about why it is appealing, hours it’s open, admission costs, and a phone number for more info. There is no need to include excursions that can be booked; the cruise-goers we are targeting buy these almost exclusively through their cruise line. The number of entries should be based on the availability of outdoor activities.ShoppingA listing of interesting and popular places to buy things, like duty-free, apparel, souvenirs, and local markets. Format the same as above, with one short paragraph per store or marketplace with the relevant logistical details.Dining & Entertainment Here, there are going to dozens of potential entries. Please include 3-4 each of cafes, restaurants, and bars / nightlife for a total of 10-12 entries covering food and drinks for the whole day. These can be even shorter than the descriptions above. The entries at Wikitravel for St. Thomas are a good guide for format and length, but should include hours, and ideally one more sentence of description.
http://wikitravel.org/en/St._Thomas#EatLogisticsThis section is for reference; it can be delivered as a list with a sentence of additional info if it makes sense. It should include: a description of the local transportation situation (taxis, rental cars, bike rentals), contact information for local tourist bureaus (web and phone number), emergency/police numbers, internet cafes (with location, contact, info and hours), and post office (with location, contact, info and hours).Perfect DayHere we’re looking for one paragraph describing a “perfect outing” for a given timeframe. We’d like to get 3 different paragraphs: 1. a perfect 4-hour visit that hits the highlights of this port, 2 & 3. Two 8-hour visits with different themes (for instance, one that starts early and focuses on outdoor activities, and a second one that starts later and covers shopping, dinner, and nightlife). The idea is to paint a picture of a wonderful day that lets the reader really imagine being there.
