Okay, so when you get a new book, or you read one, do you break/crack/what ever the spine?

I do. I like the book to be open enough when I read it. Bad habit.

Wow, i was the only one who voted no on the poll. XD

But i don't break book spines for the same reason as Ihana. I have OCD when it comes to this kind of stuff. XD I even worry about smudging the pages with my fingers. ^^;;

Not intentionally, but usually by the time I'm done reading the spine is broken to some extent.  Given, I prefer hardback books anyway.

This is exactly what happens to me also.
I usually feel the book has then been worn in, sort of like a new pair of shoes.

I tend not to, but if it's a big ol' book with a lot of pages and I need to refer to a section in it (e.g. a number of my technical books), I will invariably break it eventually, but it's not something I generally do on my paperbacks.

SBA 22 June 2009.
"I broke another spine yesterday. I'd been clean for three weeks previous, but the urge and the thought of the satisfaction afterwards compelled me to pick it up and open it sharply at the middle page." Other people around the sinner cringe at the thought, though it's merely a show for the leader. Secretly they too long to do the same thing. They kept their eyes focused, anxious to hear more.
"I held it there for several moments, enjoying the odd squeek that it made. It was more of a creek - the think wod of pages rubbing together, the encouraging sound of friction." The leader began to notice the otehr members itch and fidget, knowing exactly what they were thinking.

I have no idea where that came from. I was taken by the thought of spine breaking! Not my best work, I agree.....

The only thing I really crack consistently is my knuckles. I'm terrible for that...

Woah, Lunar, that would make a really awesome persona-story or persona-poem or something like that. Where the reader thinks the person is breaking a real person's spine, but at the end we find out it's just a book spine. :D

Yes i do, it's just better when I read. Of course the book tends to look a bit ugly after awhile but I get used to it.

Now that would depend, depends on the book.  Some I'm gentle with others not so gentle.

I've thought about it, but i've always just lived with it when a book won't open fully.  Usually by the time i'm halfway through it, it starts cooperating :P

Same here. But I don't have your affection for hardcovers, sadly. They're too heavy for me, and I like to read lying down.

Oh gosh! NO!

I love my books pristine. For some reason I make an effort not to crease the spine.

But some of my books that I've read again and again (The Princess Bride) ends up with creases no matter how hard I try not to crease them. :) is it sad for me to say, I think about getting replacement copies of the books I read to death?

This thread reminds me of this (Warning: Some blood and spine creasing is involved). But to stay on topic, I do try to not break the spine if the book is not mine. Otherwise, I don't really care too much.

This happens to me, too. Even so, I prefer paperback instead of hardbacks anyway. I don't mind the spine being worn in. I think it's a sign of a well-read book and it's actually how I used to pick out books at the library. The ones with the most roughed-up spines were obviously checked out and read frequently, so that would pull me in.

(Sung to the tune of "Rockabye Baby")

Breaking the book spines
When will it stop?
Do it too much
And the pages will drop
When the page drops
All the plots will go South
And you'll be left hanging
With open mouth

Yes, I do break my spines and I'm proud of it :) I like reading in a comfortable way.

About Bunny
Jade Elizabeth is an eccentric young woman who enjoys writing stories and poems with hidden deeper meanings. She is quoted saying “Writing to me is not a hobby. It's a passion. It's something that lets my thoughts expose themselves, and my heart shine through where other art could not.

Commonly her poems are inspired by love or depression, and are dedicated to the people who encouraged the emotion. Given the chance she will readily pull her poems apart, exposing the deeper and hidden meanings behind her words.

Her stories are usually unspoken messages to those close to her – giving every story a hidden meaning. Some things are better left unsaid, or in her case, expressed indirectly through stories.

Jade used to write Documentation for Simple Machines in her free time, but has since begun studying and working, which takes up most of her free time now.
