I've reached one of those points in my story where it could go either way.  I've roughly drafted each possibility, but neither one is shining through as the "right" path to take.  It reminds me of the film 'Sliding Doors', where there are two stories taking place at the same time in someone's life.  I've tried putting it aside for a while and seeing if I feel strongly about either option after some time has passed, but I can't stop thinking about it.

What do you do when you hit these little stumbling blocks, whether major or minor?

I think that the way that I deal with it  is to just get quiet somewhere, or go for a walk where you are not going to be actively thinking; and then just let your subconscious mind wander around the subject  and see what it comes up with.
I find that when I try to hard, it seems to just shut my mind down, and I lose all of the creativity.  When I can just let it go, then my mind will still be working on it, and then an idea will eventually pop into my head that seems to be just the right thing.
Another thing that I do is just to daydream about how it should go, as if the story is actually taking place in my mind; and then see which one seems to fit in best with where i want the story to go. Sometimes, something totally new and different comes along in my mind when I do this, too.

You should try multiple paths, maybe since this one doesn't feel right there is a better one waiting to be brainstormed? :)

I agree with Bunny.

I have actually written two full versions of the same initial story before because I couldn't decide which 'path' felt right. Turns out, they ended up being very different stories in the end and I liked both of them.

There was this book I read when I was younger about these mice who lived on an island and found these special stones. One of the mice brought one home. Then the pages are half size and the top half is the happy ending and the bottom the sad one. In the top they replaced the rocks they took with painted rocks from their homes. Everything was happier. In the sad one they took so many rocks their island was destroyed and I think they all drowned or something.

Found it online: Milo and The Magical Stones.

Anyway...what's to say you can't have two endings? That may have been a childrens book....but there's nothing stopping you from saying "happy ending page 300, sad ending page 400" on a page before they start or something :D.

I try to just erase everything and start from a blank slate. I don't mean the story I mean the idea. Erase the previous ideas you have and start out new. Think of the story, analyze the situation and criticize every bit on your end and you'll find yourself writing the proper follow up.

Thanks everyone.   :)  I took a break from it for a few days, and as HFLady said above, I let myself daydream, and some good possibilities came to me.

I'm going with Bunny's idea of the two different endings - I've never attempted something like this before, but I really like the challenge, and I'm having fun with it today.  :D :D

Thanks everyone.

About KittyK
I've been writing since I was a child, and I still love writing today.  I've amassed an impressive amount of work over the years, but I remain unpublished.  Why?  I lack the confidence to get my work out there and try my luck at making it in the world of writing.

Whilst I wait for myself to climb out of this phase, I'm going to at least try to put some of my work up on the Kindle platform....That can't be too scary now, can it??

Writing Style
Thriller, some romance, poetry, stage plays, radio drama.
