My husband and son like store bought bread, but I prefer making my own. I really enjoy a flat bread or pitta bread with a little spice or herbs. It only takes minutes to mix and bake in the oven. I have found that in many instances store bought bread made me feel bad. Sometimes I would suffer from heartburn. The freshly baked is not too bad, but I still prefer my own. I have also recently taken to making my own pasta with flour. It is quite simple. After mixing I just roll it out, let it dry with a fan and cut with a scissors. Then I cook it. Fresh makes a huge difference.
I belong to a site called Digestion.com. I was shocked to discover how many people are living with different types of digestive conditions in the world today. Most have similar symptoms, yet hundreds and thousands still go undiagnosed, unable to get help. Most live with their conditions and use medications as relief. In many instances dietary changes have helped. Spending time on this site made me aware of how dangerous it is to eat food without knowing what is in it. A lifetime of eating this way can make you really ill.
I was experiencing several symptoms at the time, and had been for months. I did quite a lot of research and discovered that my digestive system is about seventy percent of my immune system. (I was not aware of this). This realization was enough to motivate me to take better care of it. I made a few simple changes to my diet and began to feel better almost immediately. I have to say that several months later, I now have no symptoms at all.
Where before we would eat all sorts of processed foods and buy whatever, cold meats, sausages, viennas, you name it! I have now turned my families diet back to plain home cooking. We eat chicken almost every day with carbs, rice or potatoes, pasta and vegetables. We do eat other foods, but we limit them. I want to know that everything I buy is good, nutritious, safe and fresh. Old style home cooking seems to be the healthiest way to go. We have even started baking our own biscuits, pies etc. Staying as far away from processed stuff as much as possible. I make my own pickles and sun dried tomatoes in the oven.
I am waiting for my new food processor and then I will start making my own natural peanut butter etc.
Eating this way does sometimes take a little more time, but it is healthier. It does not take so much time that I do not want to do it. I have learned from recipes I find on the internet.
Shopping for food has become a lot simpler as you know exactly what you are going to buy and you stay away from preservative loaded foods. I even make my own syrup.
I don't like anything to be complicated and I find living this way a lot simpler and healthier.
We all want take-out on occasion and of-course we do have it, but we eat simply most of the time.
