Okay a bit of backstory here....
I was taken to the ER last week on Wednesday or when ever for high fevers of 103-104. I'd had them since Monday along with all the cold and flu symptoms minus the throat and nose issues.
They told me I had Mono, and that my liver and spleen were badly swollen. On TOP of the organs swelling my stomach was over producing gas at a rate too fast to burp out and it wasnt going out the other end, so I was squishing everything causing more pain. I managed to lessen that with Gas-X, which if it didnt eliminate it all got it to the point where I could actually burp it out. If it were a person I'd hug it cause the pain that gas was causing was intense to say the least. My stomach looked as though I was pregnant from it, and once after taking it I was laying on it slightly and fell over as the Gas-X deflated it :o. THAT was awesome.
A week later, on Monday and Tuesday I find my nose imitating a fire hydrant. I went to the ER both times unable to stop the bleeding. The first time I pass out twice and they stopped the bleeding. I eventually go home to bed. The second time they couldnt stop the bleeding and it was twice as bad, so they insert what they call a Rhino Rocket. It's a tampon for your nose. That stopped it but shortly there after I went into shock and everything's fuzzy cause I'm passing out or semi-conscious and trembling. Apparently I terrified the doctor and everyone else cause of my heart rate. They EVENTUALLY get a saline shot and an IV into me and I wake up.
I am told to return two days later on Friday, which is tomorrow, to get the Rocket removed. I know my nose will PROBABLY start bleeding again, and I refuse to remove it myself. The doctor also told me I HAVE to get an ear throat and nose surgeon to deal with it anyway.
So. I call my mum to tell her what's happening and she accidentally canceled my appt because she thought it was a hospital in GA, and I'm in TN right now. I laugh at her lovingly and go to call the hospital back to re-book my appt.
When I call the receptionist asks if I have Mono. I reply with yes. She asks if I'm over it. I say no.
She tells me she cannot allow me to come in until I am over the Mono. I'm not okay at this point and trying not to cry as I explain I need to get this rocket out of my nose and I was TOLD to come in by the ER who know I have Mono. I also have to explain to this woman who doesnt seem to know what a Rhino Rocket is that I CANNOT remove it myself and my nose may need to be cauterized afterwards anyways, so it wouldnt be wise for me to remove it either way. I'm also considering explaining the whole bacteria and blood poisoning deal that could come from having a tampon up your nose for a month or three (the time Mono can take) but she gets the idea and talks to her supervisor. They are allowing me to come in.
BEFORE you go further please note that Mono is contracted via saliva. That means kissing, knives and forks, cups, etc. It can be contracted FOR UP TO SIX MONTHS AFTER THE SYMPTOMS. You can have it for 1-3 months, but they like to tell you the symptoms last 10 days. You can even not get symptoms and not know so what ever.
NOW my question is this: IS it okay to deny treating people in a doctors office or clinic (or even a hospital) because of a pre-existing disease? You might say in some cases yes. Like HIV/AIDS BUT I say no. That's contracted by exchanging fluids, as far as I understand that's mostly blood. So if everyone keeps wounds wrapped and takes the correct precautions (safety goggles, gloves, masks, etc) there shouldnt be a problem.
Then you bring ethics into it. The people treating you. They signed on knowing they will be around sick people and may contract diseases. I believe there's even a note that they could contract a fatal disease and this will not get in the way of their jobs.
To be frank, in my situation, am I NOT allowed medical care for the next 6 months unless I'm bleeding to death again?! If I had AIDs would I not be allowed care until I'm on my deathbed?! Where are the lines?!
I feel like it's my 13th birthday again, where I was told I had mumps and had to blow the candles out down a long hallway so no one else would get my GLAND INFECTION. Which they told me I had later, not mumps. Basically, I feel like they're telling me I'm contaminated and they're quarantining me, when what I have isnt contagious if everyone watches their hygiene.
I feel excluded and alienated
